Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint

Planter Pot Rescue – MMSMP Dried Lavender

One of the things I already love so much about Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint is it’s amazing ability to adhere to almost anything.
A while back I picked this pot up for free…discarded I am guessing because of the large chip out of the rim. Chipped pots are pretty ugly.
It was glazed to a glossy shine so I wasn’t convinced the paint would stick, but I was in for a pleasant surprise!

First I needed to fix the chip. It was fairly large and for anything sizeable like this my ‘goto’ filler is actually car body filler. It’s an epoxy filler that you measure out and mix with a catalyst at 1 part to 50. It sets really hard but is still sandable and within 30 mins I had my chip filled, sanded and read to paint over.

I picked up the pots of Lavender at our local Woolworths for $1.80 a pot. They just needed water and were reduced from $9! Win!
To compliment the colour of my pretty blooms I decided to try MMSMP Dried Lavender. Miss Mustard Seed's Dried LavenderWhilst I was mixing the paint up it looked a lot more blue than lavender, but once painted and dried it was definitely not blue but a delicate mauve.
I gave the pot a good wash, dried it with some paper towel and my first coat of paint was on and drying in two minutes flat.
After 45 minutes I gave the first coat a quick sand to smooth out any bumps and applied my second coat.
I wanted the detail on the pot to ‘pop’ with a complimentary colour so I mixed my leftover Dried Lavender with some Ironstone which is MMSMP’s white, and got a really gorgeous pastel mauve. I used a small artists brush to paint the detailed areas.
Another quick sand followed by a generous brushing over with MMS Hemp Oil to protect and seal the paint and my pot was ready for planting out. Miss Mustard Seed recommends her Tung Oil for the best protection for outdoor application and we will have some in stock very soon, but in the meantime, the Hemp Oil should give it enough protection provided I don’t put it out in torrential rain!

I was so totally sold on the colour ‘Dried Lavender’ that I wanted to use it again straightaway! I thought it might be nice to have a collection of pots in the same colour but different styles. I bought this pot last year for $10 but it became discoloured over that time and really needed a clean up so was the perfect candidate. It was also more porous being terracotta so I was keen to see how well it would paint.

I used two coats of Dried Lavender, followed by two coats of Hemp Oil (24 hours apart to allow each coat to dry). I wanted to highlight the pretty detail on the planter but maintain it’s old world character, so I rubbed MMS White Wax all over the pot then wiped off the excess. This meant that the low areas held onto the wax, therefore highlighting all the grooves and details.
I love how this kept it similar to the first pot but not ‘matchy matchy’ which I am not a fan of.

The two pots look fabulous together but I have one more pot to paint before I share the little ‘pot corner’ I am creating
