There’s no doubt about it….using Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint has challenged the perfectionist in me and my love affair with all things ‘chippy’ has well and truly begun! No matter how many times I have started in the past to embark on creating a really rustic looking piece, that perfectionist arrives and I end up with a ‘safe’ piece. I am truly fascinated by the unpredictability of Milk Paint and the fact that it’s quite truly a lucky dip as to what end result you will achieve by not adding the bonding agent. Bonding Agent stops the paint from chipping so you end up with an opaque finish. I’m sure there will be pieces in the near future that I will choose to use the bonding agent with, but for now I am loving watching the magic happen when I just let the paint do it’s thing. This sweet little side table was looking tired and the stained top was faded from age. I painted it with 3 coats of MMS Linen which is a creamy white, then left it overnight to do it’s chippy thing. The next morning I took a piece of 320 grit sandpaper and sanded it all over to smooth the painted surface and remove any flakes where it chipped. I finished the painted part of with MMS Clear Furniture Wax. This wax goes on so easily and it’s creamy and light. I always love adding the finish as it deepens the colour and brings out the rich tones of the wood peeping through. The wood top still looked tired so I gave it a once over with a darker gel stain ( I love Wattyl’s Gel Stains and my go to colour is ‘Wenge’) and when that was dry I finished it with a coat of MMS Hemp Oil, which deepened the colour and gave it a lovely sheen. The finished piece is totally adorable, don’t you think?
